heat and thermodynamics
- Conduction - is the transfer of thermal energy with no overall transfer of matter. Conduction occurs when materials are touching. Conduction in gases is slower than in liquids and solids because the particles in a gas collide less often. Conduction is fastest in metals because some electrons are free to move about an collide most often.
- convection - is the transfer of thermal energy when particles of a fluid move from one place to another, like sand inside of a sandbag.
- radiation - is the transfer of energy by waves moving through space, like heat lamps used to keep food warm.
- A thermal conductor is something that conducts thermal energy well. This is why a hot pan burns you, because the metal conducts thermal energy so quickly.
-Thermal insulators are materials that conduct thermal energy poorly. Like an oven mit, so you dont burn your hand.
-Temperature is higher in the bottom of on oven because of convection. when the heat rises it cools off and sinks back down to get hot again, so the bottom is constantly hot in an oven.
-All objects put off radiation, radiation travels in waves, so the farther away you are from an object, the less radiation you recieve.
-The study of conversions between thermal energy and other forms of energy is called thermodynamics.
-The first law of thermodynamics states that energy is conserved.
-The second law of thermodynamics states that thermal energy can flow from colder objects to hotter objects, only if work is done.
