Thermal Energy and Matter
-Heat - is the transfer of thermal energy from one object to another because of a temperture difference. Heat flows from hot objects to cold objects. Heat is produced my friction.
-Temperture - is a measure of how hot or cold an object is compared to a reference point.
-The freezing point of water in celsius is 0 and the boiling point is 100.
- Heating and temperature increas of an object happens when the objects particles are moving fast. The faster the particles move, the hotter the object is.
-Thermal energy - is the total potential and kinetic energy of all the particles in an object, Thermal energy depends on the objects mass, temperature, and phrase of matter.
- When an object heats up it expands, when an object cools it contracts. this is called thermal expansion.
-Specific heat- is the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of one gram of a substance by 1°C.
-Metal has a lower specific heat than plastic so its temperature rises faster when heat is absorbed.
-Calorimeter- is an instrument used to measure changes in thermal energy.
